Opinion’s on Food Stamps

images (54)Hey everyone,
today i have a specific question on my mind so i thought i would post it and see what kind of responses i get.
When it comes to the welfare program, do you feel that food stamps are given out to to many people, who dont necessarily need them? I would love to hear your thoughts on the matter.

  1. This is a difficult question to answer, especially without meaningful data on EBT abuses. I do know, though, that with the recent EBT card system and tracking product purchases, it is forcing people on food stamps to buy food instead of other things.

Need is also another precarious thing. Some states go by a flat rate of income, and cost of living varies within the state. So there definitely can be problems where people in a lower cost of living area get more money, and therefore live better, than people who live in a higher cost of living area.

But that’s just one aspect. I’ve witnessed people who need food stamps not able to make ends meet, and I’ve witnessed people on food stamps use it to avoid paying for food they can afford.

I can’t say if they are given out to too many people but I will say that I have seen people truly struggling who could not get them and people who spend money on things that they should not and get them. I just wish there was a better system for it.

  3. I don’t know how to answer your question, MX4B, but I know I wish there was not a stigma about using them when you really need them to feed your family.

  4. I think I’d probably have to look at each person’s case individually. I used to work as a dietitian in the WIC (women-infants-children) department and I saw both sides of the coin. All I know is that the older I get the more I understand that I will never fully know a person unless I walk in their shoes.

  5. The system is broken, Diana. I have no issue whatsoever with people getting and using them who have genuine need. And there are PLENTY of people like that. But, as has been pointed out, some get them who don’t appear to need them, and others who do can’t. System: Broken.
