Nonsmoking and kinda grumpy me

Nonsmoking and kinda grumpy me

Hey everyone,
I did something day before yesterday that i thought was impossible, I quit smoking.
It has been almost 48 hours since i had my last cigarettes and i kinda feel like pulling my hair out or chewing my own tongue off at times, but all in all its going pretty well. Especially considering i was a smoker for 20 years and that i really loved my smokes, but i love my life and my family more. I think the last straw for me was when i talked to my dad the other day and he told me he has copd, that kinda made it a reality that every time i smoked one of my cigarettes i was slowly and willingly killing myself.
I never thought i would be able to call myself a nonsmoker but here i am, truthfully i was getting a little worried, i couldnt even walk from my car to my front door without being extremely out of breath and my heart racing so fast that i felt like it was gonna burst outta my chest. Its funny how when you’re done you’re just done, and you know it. In the past i said i was gonna quit, but in the back of my mind i knew i had not had my last smoke, like i said i really enjoyed my cigarettes. But now i am done, i love my kids, my husband, and myself way to much to throw it all away just so i dont have to be uncomfortable right now. Though i am done no matter what, i really hope this want for a cigarette gos away with time, cause it sucks really bad, lol.

  1. Congrats! Hope you stay cigarette free! If you get those cig cravings, I heard chewing gum works. It’s hard to sustain those cravings, but you can do it!!

Today is my 8th month of being nicotine free. Drinking acidic juices like orange juice or cranberry juice will help flush the rest of the nicotine out of your system faster. It takes 72 hours for it to fully get out of your system.

I wish I could tell you that the cravings go away, but they don’t. However, they do get incredibly manageable. They will be nothing compared to what you are going through now.

Best of luck to you! Once you get through the worst of it, it’ll get better!

The next to last time I tried quitting (about a year ago) I met someone while jogging that told me the same thing about how the cravings never fully go away. I think I was on week 2 of quitting or something, and I felt terrible about it. What this person didn’t tell me was that the cravings aren’t the same as what you’re going through in the first three days.

And learning to deal with these other cravings helps, because it’ll help you stay away from nicotine. Above all else, remember you’re doing an awesome thing. You’re kicking an addiction to a chemical that’s only slightly less addictive than heroin. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it. Hang in there. It does get better.

  9. I quit nearly a year ago. It’s tough but I found if you can go a week, it’s a hell of a lot easier after that.

    Congratz! That’s an excellent decision.

  19. First of all congratulations! I gave up smoking in February after 35 years, it’s quiet a roller coaster ride :-). I wish you strengths and I would advise you (if you don’t mind) to look into online support boards. I quit on my own, but it was so much easier on a board with other former smokers. I learned a lot and it helped me through the first 3 months. I mention one board on my about page. I am not there anymore, I have been smoke-free since 6 months, but I would go back in a heartbeat. I hope you don’t mind the novel I just wrote 🙂

  20. Believe me, the cravings do go away, it just takes time. I started young and smoked for 30 years. In the end I was chain-smoking all day – if I was awake, there was a cigarette in my mouth – but I quit 11 years ago and never looked back. The early days are the worst, if you can get through those you’ll be cooking on gas. If I can do it, you can!

  21. I’m so, so proud of you! Yes, it is a beautiful decision that not only honors your family, but first and foremost yourself!! I smoked for more years than I care to admit, but June 14th this year was 23 years smoke free for me!!! I can’t even believe I ever did it. It is really hard, but you can do anything you put your mind to!!! In the beginning, when I really wanted one I would go outside and run as fast as I could until I thought I was going to die….then I would fall on somebody’s lawn gasping for air. A few times I had people come out to see if I was ok. After a while the neighborhood knew what I was doing and they would give me a thumbs up. I have never regretted quitting 🙂 NEVER! ❤

  26. I know it’s hard, I had non smokers in my family and after a lifetime of that, they all quit cold turkey. Stay strong and focused on your future with those you love. I may not know you that well, but I’m still proud of you for thinking about your family first and wanting to give them the best of you.

  28. Hello! I just finished reading your post about quitting smoking. I’m here to offer you a lot of encouragement. . .I was in the same boat a decade ago. However I may have been a bit worse off than you are right now. As a result of 34 years of smoking I had a double lung transplant nearly 9 years ago. I am happy that you have decided to quit and I will be here if you need talk or need a kick in the butt. It’s difficult, but so is breathing. I have a blog called: http://www.breathingitsagoodthing.com I have a second blog called: http://www.sandyshopefulroom.com. Feel free to look around.
I wish you all the best. I am following you and keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.
Be blessed and to smoke free breathing!!!
